Art alone for Santha
Santha C, 50, from Kozhikode, is an artist, single woman and a communist. Which comes first she cannot say. As a young woman, she simply loved to paint. When she dropped out of school after ‘failing in Class 8’, she simply helped around i
n her house, where she says, ‘money was scarce but love was aplenty’. She reared hens and ducks which enabled her to buy paint, water colours, paper and brush. Later, she studied art at the S.K. Samskarika Kalakendram. She paints what she saw around her: Trees, people and animals. Of late she has got on to the abstract bandwagon. One of her three works, is an abstract one. In sad colours, it seems to proclaim loud her life. But Santa is full of life and optimistic, talking about her political beliefs. “Just the other day, for the first time, I sold four of my works for Rs 10,000. I have done more than 300 paintings, but framing them costs too much and I cannot afford it,” she says in a matter-fact tone.
