Think pink

Women who have a penchant for travel, jump on the WOW bandwagon

Explore the world With Women on Wanderlust

Women in different shades and degrees of pink — a dupatta, sari, a bag, pair of earrings or even a top. Pink is their unifying colour — a colour that brings and binds “Women on Wanderlust” together.

WOW was started by Sumitra Senapaty, a travel-writer from New Delhi in 2005, as an attempt to bring together cosmopolitan women with a common desire to travel. It is a group that comprises both working and retired women from all over India — women who have an urge to explore and are unable to do so. Reasons vary, from having an equally busy husband and friends whose schedules don’t match, travel agents who hike up single occupancy rates to simply in want of like-minded, carefree company.

In the latest attempt to bring these women together, WOW collaborated with Brindco of Grover Vineyards for a wine evening on a weekend. You could call it Weekend on Wanderlust or Women on Wine. It was an evening of leisure and pleasure for women who were asked to “wear pink and bring along a lady friend”.

Says Sumitra Senapaty: “Women have arrived in India — they could be single and independent or retired with grown-up children — they have the time and money to travel. WOW steps in to help women from Chennai, Coimbatore or Guwahati work around bosses who don’t give leave and clashing family travel plans. "Sumitra plans to target NRI women as well in the future.

WOW has managed eight trips in 2007 including Greece, Turkey and China. There are more lined up this year from Egypt in February and Turkey and New Zealand in April to Italy in May. They have had different sets of women —friends, mother-daughter or sister duo or simply single women.

Says Sophia M., a software consultant: “There were about 20 of us who went to Egypt in November, and I had a good time. It was a liberating experience. Nobody bothers about what you wear, say or do. It’s all about being yourself in the midst of fun-loving and warm company.”

The group also regularly catches up for movies and bashes to keep the spirit alive. Get in touch with WOW on www.wowsunita.com or email Sumitra me@wowsumitra.com
