Revel in Jalsa
The Indian Music Academy, spearheaded by Durga Jasraj and Vikram Shankar, presented Idea Jalsa, a two-day music festival in New Delhi’s Siri Fort auditorium this week.
Featuring flute maestro Hari Prasad Chaurasia, ghazal singer Hariharan and young vocalists Samrat Dasgupta and Jaswinder Singh, the event was part of a countrywide extravaganza mounted by the IMA. Two key concepts are notable in the organisation of the ongoing festival covering 24 cities and various artistes. One is the programming, which clubs upcoming and established artistes in a single evening, and the other is the open house, allowing audience questions at the end of the concerts.
This is part of IMA’s efforts to reach out to a wider public who may not be aware of the technicalities of music.
The IMA’s panel, said Durga Jasraj at a press meet in New Delhi, consists of eminent artistes including Chaurasia — whom she referred to as “the biggest support system for us” — and other maestros from various fields like Zakir Hussain, Javed Akhtar, Balamuralikrishna, Pyarelal among others.
The objective of the IMA, said Durga, is to promote different genres of music and work for the welfare of artists — “anyone who has contributed to music for ten years or more”.
