Healthy food at affordable cost

For homely taste and variety

Scrumptious Catering to taste buds

When food in hotels is all about different taste and attractive flavours, a team of youth has embarked with an objective of providing healthy food at affordable prices, with a ‘home-made’ tag.

This is all about Madurai Foods, an evening food joint, near Reserve Line. The moment you park your vehicle, a pleasant smile greets you. Dinner is served by apron and glove clad youth with the smile that does not fade till you leave.

Established by a 15-member team of undergraduates, postgraduates and advocates sharing a common interest in yoga. After knocking vainly at doors of employment, they decided to become employers. The result is in the form of Madurai Foods.

Unique taste

The 50-day-old food park attracts many with its food items that are unique in taste. ‘Malligai poo idli’ comes with three kinds of chutney and sambar at Rs.2 a piece.

The other South Indian favourite, dosa, is served in seven varieties. The ‘veettu dosa,’ an ordinary dosa made at home, which is smaller in size, ‘mushroom dosa,’ ‘cauliflower dosa,’ ‘paneer dosa,’ ‘ghee roast,’ ‘podi dosa’ and ‘adai dosa.’

All varieties are available at Rs.12 while the ghee roast costs Rs.15. There are ‘oil othappam,’ ‘onion othappam’ and rice varieties. All served amidst a cacophony of paratha ovens surrounding the joint.

Three dangerous whites

“As we are a group of people with a base in yoga and healthy living, we have decided to avoid three dangerous whites – sugar, salt and maida,” says P. Jeyasundaram and hastily adds that they use salt minimally.

For those who ask for paratha, wheat chappathi is served. The youth patiently explain that maida is not good for health. The fast moving items of Madurai Foods are idli and adai dosa.

Why not try fast food items? No, it is against our team’s ethics, he says and adds that they have plans to extend their service in the form of providing natural food such as soaked cereals in future.

“Now we earn for ourselves and also help others earn besides helping people to have a good and healthy food,” he says.

Madurai Foods has tables near which people can stand and eat. Though many customers have requested them to provide seats, Mr. Jeyasundaram says that lack of space has forced them to offer only tables.

Initially, they wanted to concentrate on parcel service. They have also planned to form a self-help group to avail themselves of loans to improve business and infrastructure. Outdoor catering service is also done on order.
