I had put on weight. I exercised and got into shape, but the fat from my cheeks is not going. Namita

Try the following exercises daily. Keep your lips closed, smile; then suck in your cheeks towards the teeth. Hold for a count of 10; relax and repeat the exercise 10 times. Next, smile as widely as possible with your lips closed. Then, wrinkle your nose. Hold for a count of 5. Relax and repeat the exercise. Keep your jaws and lips closed, blow air under your top lip and hold it for 10 counts, then move the air to your left cheek, hold it for 10 counts, then to your lower lip for 10 counts and then to your right cheek for 10 counts. Relax and repeat the exercise 5 times.

I have black lips. Suggest a remedy. Suman

The skin on the lips is delicate. After washing your face, when your lips are wet, rub them gently with a soft towel. This helps remove dead skin. Then apply cream of milk and leave it on for an hour. Apply pure almond oil daily on your lips at night, leaving it on overnight. You can also apply a sunscreen lotion sparingly on your lips before going out in the sun.

I have wheaten complexion but my forearms are darker than the rest of my body. I do not go out too much in the sun. Priya

Mix gram flour (besan) with curd, lemon juice and a little turmeric (haldi). Apply this on your arms thrice a week. Leave it on for half an hour. Wash it off and then massage til oil into the skin. Or, mix 4 tbsp of sunflower oil and 6 tbsp of coarse sugar into a paste. Rub this into the skin, rinsing it off after 15 minutes.

I’ve been losing hair for the past six months. I’ve started using a herbal hair oil. Does hot oil massage control hair loss and stimulate hair growth? Aishwarya

Avoid vigorous massage and rubbing if there is hair loss. Use only the finger tips and actually move the scalp in small circular movements. If there is hair loss, the roots are weak and massage may aggravate the problem. Heat oil and apply it once a week, the night before you shampoo your hair. You can also apply a herbal hair tonic daily. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soya bean, curd and paneer in your diet. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.

I have lots of lice in my hair. What is the remedy? Naz

Apply vinegar on the scalp and hair. Leave it on for half an hour. Then comb your hair with a fine lice comb. The nits (eggs) have to be removed manually. Vinegar loosens the nits making them easier to remove. Then wash your hair, using less shampoo and rinsing well with water. Add two tbsp of vinegar to a mug of water and use it as a last rinse. Then comb again with a fine comb. Do this daily for a week.

My elbows look rough and dry. Suggest a home remedy. Soumya

Take two lemon halves and rub them on your elbows daily. Wash it off and then apply til oil and massage it into the skin. Scrub with a loofah while bathing. Then apply a cream on the elbows while the skin is still damp. Massage it into the skin. It helps seal in the moisture.
