Breaking barriers

In the absence of cures for many debilitating diseases, claims of a breakthrough always arouse interest. Dr. Dhani Ram Baruah claims to have used genetic engineering in humans to cure diseases like myeloid dysplastic syndrome (MDS) and cerebral palsy , etc.

A practicing cardiac surgeon for many years he has performed numerous bypass surgeries but believes “bypass surgery is a mismatch surgical procedure, injurious to the heart and health, and leaves the patient with an uncertain future, often leading to premature death.” He asserts mightily, “I don’t bother about the medical fraternity. If they support me – they will lose their business. Surgeons will have to sell potatoes and onions for a living.”

He explains that an “edible medicinal plant molecule” is isolated, then given intravenously to the patient. “The diseased genes cause errors in the pathway. When we manipulate the molecule – it removes errors and reverses the metabolic pathway, which cures the disease.” He loftily claims, “Without genetic engineering there is no future for humans.” While bypass surgery removes blockages only in the heart, genetic engineering removes blockages in the artery tree permanently, he explains. The treatment cost depends on the severity of the disease, vary varying from 1.5 lakhs to four lakh rupees.
