Small car from Toyota

After intensive feasibility studies that have stretched for years, Toyota has finally given the green light to its small car programme (code: EFC) for the Indian market. An announcement is expected to be made soon and according to company sources Toy ota president Katsuaki Watanabe may come down to India to make the announcement himself.

However, Toyota’s small car isn’t exactly small. The company will initially launch a Fiesta-sized saloon with a 1.5-litre petrol and 1.4-litre turbo-diesel and price them in the Rs 6-7 lakh range. A hatchback version is expected as well but “this will not be the focus of the company because profitability is an issue with the hatchback” said a company official. Toyota has been grappling with costs largely because it doesn’t want to compromise on quality of components.
