Irrelevant
Valentine’s Day was named after the Christian clergy Valentine on his martyrdom on February 14 three centuries ago. He was crucified for helping lovers to get married against orthodox ethics followed in those days. As such, it could be inferred that love before marriage was forbidden in those days. Infatuation between the opposite genders in adolescence has been grossly misconstrued to be love. Students are the ones who celebrate the day by absenting themselves from schools and colleges. In spite of the diversity among us on various aspects, we have our own and unique family system and a woman is engaged to a man by elders and this marital life thrives forever. Valentine’s Day is totally irrelevant to the cultural heritage of this country and it is high time that our youngsters realised their folly and concentrated in their studies. It is strange that the day of death of the clergy Valentine, to be mourned, is celebrated by lovers.
