Passionate Trying to make a mark
Television anchor James Vasanthan makes a foray into cine music direction through ‘Subramaniapuram,’ set for release soon. Determined to make an impact, James has even turned down a lot of TV assignments in the past year and a half.
“Many asked me why the sudden transformation, when things are getting on well. But my first love has always been music. And hope my efforts will turn fruitful,” says James, who has earlier composed music for a Tamil pop album ‘Vasanai.’
‘Subramaniapuram,’ directed by Sasikumar has Jai of ‘Chennai – 600028’ fame in the lead. The director had initially planned to do the film without songs.
“May be that’s why Sasikumar chose me as the music director,” he laughs. “But I had to convince him later on. And as the shooting progressed, he also felt the need. I hope the songs will reach the audience well,” he adds.
James says Sasikumar gave him freedom in his work and was also very receptive to ideas. “Having worked under some fine directors like Bala and Ameer, he has the experience. Still he never interfered in my work and even accepted some of my suggestions. That only shows the belief he has in my abilities and I have done my best to live up to his expectations.”
James finds a lot of difference between film and pop music compositions, and says that they are two separate entities.
“While doing music for a pop album, I am not bound to any restrictions. But film music is different, as I have to make sure the tunes befit the story and also the director’s taste,” he says.
The storyline of ‘Subramaniapuram,’ is set in the 80’s. So, has James composed music keeping in mind the style adopted during that period? “I first decided to do so, but later felt that people might think my work to be old-fashioned. I have composed tunes that suit the storyline and I think that is most important.”
James has done four songs in the movie and has introduced two singers – Bellie Raj and Deepa Miriam. “They have sung a duet and it has come out well. They are gifted singers and have a bright future in the industry,” he predicts.
Background score
James says he has given due attention to the background score in the film. “I very well know its importance. I took my time to make sure the score gels with the mood.”
Having been known as a television anchor for years, James feels it might take time for people to recognise him as a music director.
“It also depends on the success of the songs and movie. Once my compositions top the charts, my longing might shape up well very quickly,” he signs off.
