No need

I do not know whether to laugh or weep over the decision of the DMK Government and the bill passed in the Assembly to celebrate ‘first of Thai as Tamil New Year Day.’ One cannot say for how many thousands of years the first of Chithirai is being celebrated as Tamil New Year day. Can the order of the week be changed as Sunday, Tuesday, Monday and Wednesday? In the same manner, can the names of months be changed? Every month has its own significance and festival. Pongal gives enough happiness. There is no need to club it with New Year, which could be celebrated as usual on the first of Chithirai.

T. R. Sadasivam,

Madurai.
