‘Monster on the move’

MTC bus drivers should be made to follow road rules, says Jemmi Angelin Manoharan, a BPO employee

One day while returning from work in our office cab, we were behind a speeding MTC bus. At Madhya Kailash, it suddenly swerved to the right — without an indicator and without slowing down. A cyclist was right behind the bus, and we thought he w ill be squashed. Thankfully, he managed to apply the brakes in time. He was shaking like a leaf.

MTC bus drivers follow no rules. Traffic signals are mere blinking lights to them. Sometimes when we are behind a towering bus, we can’t see the traffic lights. So, when we are waiting for the signal to change and the bus dashes ahead, we follow. Only blaring horns make us realise that the bus driver has jumped the red signal.

The MTC buses don’t stick to the left of the road and most of the time trundle (they aren’t always fast) through the middle. Many a time, we are left following a lumbering bus, because it won’t let us overtake from the right. We may honk and plead, but no sir, the bus sticks to the middle lane.

Once I was comfortably dozing off in my office car when I was shaken out of my wits. A MTC bus coming from the opposite direction filled our windscreen. Thankfully, it moved to its side of the road, just in time. Whew!

Everyone should be made to follow the road rules. Government vehicles too should be booked for violation. I know that it is the law, but implement it strictly.
