He does not primp and preen in front of the mirror, but is slow slowed down by his cleanliness fixation. For example, he dusts a perfectly clean towel a dozen times before lifting it to his face. Once, he took an eon getting ready and we were late for an outstation journey. When we arrived at the station, the train was pulling out of the platform. He took hold of me and threw me inside, and hopped in running. We completed 50 years of marriage this Valentine’s Day and were asked a tip for a happy marriage. I would say: “The woman holds the key. Her patience and understanding can go a long way in making a marriage successful.”

Until she joined the Secretariat, where I worked. When love struck, our elders were not too happy. Her family relocated to Choolaimedu. By patiently waiting for five years, we broke down their resistance.
