Stop, in the name of love

Everyone has a favourite love song. A few music artistes reveal theirs

Life is full of melody and songs touch a chord with everyone. While some like soulful melodies, others like mushy classics. And then everyone has a favourite that makes their heart melt. Here’s what the stars listen to.

Sadhana Sargam

Melody makers Sadhana Sargam;

‘Snehitane’ from the movie “Alaypayuthe,” and ‘Pehla nasha’ from the movie “Jo Jeeta Woh Hi Sikander,” are two of my all-time favourite romantic love songs.

I love the lyrics and the music arrangement in ‘Snehitanee.’ ‘Pehla Nasha,’ to me is an evergreen composition. Despite it having been recorded in the early 1990’s, it is still a popular song, especially among those in love. ‘Chanda Re’ from the movie “Sapnay” is another favourite.

I’m not into English songs as such. But among them ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from “Titanic” is a favourite.

Blaaze

Blaaze;

My two favourite love songs are for the two special ladies in my life – my mother and my wife. For my mother it’s ‘Dear Mama’ by Tupac Shakur.

It is the first time you could play a song out loud to your mother and still be cool. Soulful lyrics from the hardest rapper ever… it’s very unique.

‘Eternal Flame’ by the Bangles was the favourite for my girlfriend (now my wife) and me.

It is the song that got a rapper twisted in love as we heard it together and fell deeper in love.

Raghav Sachar

Raghav Sachar;

Kenny G has created some brilliant romantic compositions. My favourites are ‘Havana’ and ‘Loving You.’ ‘Loving You’ is a great song to dedicate to your loved one as the music carries so much emotion.

KK’s ‘Pal’ is a song I hold close to my heart. It reminds me of my first girlfriend. I was leaving for my studies in Australia, so the thought of parting with my girlfriend and the feelings I went through was reflected in that song. I’m a bit of a hopeless romantic so songs with melody and emotion-filled lyrics are the icing on the cake. ‘Misty’ a jazz standard is another piece I enjoy listening to when I am in a sentimental mood.

In Hindi, ‘Is Mod Pe’ (“Aandhi”) is a masterpiece. To me, Gulzar, who has written the lyrics for the song, is the king of romance. ‘Is Mod Pe’ has a perfect gelling of voice, tune, lyrics and even the scene of the movie. Lyrics are what I give importance to in a love song, the tune comes secondary.

That’s probably why I like ‘Michelle’ by The Beatles, the lyrics are so direct and uncomplicated and they come straight from the heart. ‘Kanava Illai Katra’ (“Ratchagan”), a song which I have sung, and M.S. Baburaj’s ‘Innale Mayangumbol’ (Malayalam) also have soulful lyrics.

Shwetha Mohan

It has got to be ‘Ethrayo Janmamai’ (“Summer in Bethlehem”) and ‘Netru Illatha Matram Ennathu’ (“Pudhiya Mugam”). Somehow I can relate to my mother, Sujatha’s songs. I love them both for their fi ne blend of melody, lyrics and of course my mother’s voice. ‘Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You’ is one of my mother’s favourites. She used to play it often when I was young.

Back then, I liked it for its tune. But as I got older, the lyrics struck me as beautiful and meaningful and I fell in love with it.
