The Embassy of Philippines, New Delhi, the Honorary Consulate General, Republic of Philippines Chennai, the Madras Film Society and the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation are organising a Philippines Film Festival from February 18 to 27 at the South I
ndian Film Chamber Theatre, 606, Anna Salai.
The festival opens on February 18, 6.30 p.m. with “Inang Yaya”. The film revolves around a baby sitter Norma and the dilemma she faces when she has to choose between going with the child she raised and staying with the one she gave birth to.
“Dekada”, to be screened on February 19, 6.30 p.m., chronicles the story of a middle class Filipino family which, over a decade, becomes aware of the political policies that have led to repression and martial law.
On February 20, “Muro-Ami” will be screened at 6.30 p.m. It is about a fisherman who has endured great hardship in life. His wife and child perish in a boating accident. He now approaches each trip to sea with the determination of a man out to seek revenge.
In “Bata Bata Paano Ka Ginawa” (February 21, 6.30 p.m.), a woman’s rights activist and mother of two has been abandoned by the fathers of her children. Her daughter and son are at crucial transitional ages. Soon her job and her budding romance with a co-worker threaten her role as mother…
“Jose Rizal” (February 22, 6.30 p.m.) is an epic on the life and struggles of poet and patriot Jose Rizal, national hero of the Philippines. “Magnifico” (February 23, 6.30 p.m.) revolves around Edna whose life is never-ending misery. In “Mano Po” (February 24, 6.30 p.m.), everything is fine with anti-crime crusader Lilia Chiong Yang till she bumps into her first love Michael.
“Panaghoy Sa Sub” (February 25, 6.30 p.m.) deals with a love triangle set in Bohol during World War II. In “Till I Met”, (February 26, 6.15 p.m.), Senor Manuel falls in love with Luisa who poses as a rich girl. While preparing for their wedding, Luisa meets Gabriel, Senor Manuel’s right hand man. Sensing that Luisa is a fake and is only after Senor Manuel’s money, Gabriel tries to expose her…
Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo (February 26, 7.45 p.m.) concerns Angie and Jed, two most unlikely people to fall in love with each other. On February 27, “Aishite Imasu” (6.156 p.m.) and “Matakot Ka Sa Karma” (7.45 p.m.) will be screened. In the first film, the residents of a small Filipino village try to survive and fight back after their country is overrun by the Japanese during World War II.
“Matakot Ka Sa Karma” is a horror trilogy about an antique shop where the pieces of furniture have their own stories to tell.
