Sound of the hills festival

‘Octave-2008’ will showcase music, dance, food and handicrafts of the North-East



Twinkle toes ‘Octave-2008’ will feature a number of dances from the eight participating States

A week-long cultural extravaganza in the city, which begins today, will showcase the dance, music, food and culture of Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Nagaland. ‘Octave-2008’ will begin with a cultural procession from Palayam to Kanakakunnu at 3 p.m. The inauguration at Nishagandhi will be followed by dance performances choreographed by Mytheyi Pahari. A Theyyam performance will be held from 7.30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Seminars, artists’ camp and exhibitions will also be held in connection with the festival.

Residents in the city can tune in to the music of the North-East on Sunday. An Assamese choir at 6 p.m. will be followed by a choir by Mizoram. Choirs from Meghalaya and Nagaland will perform at 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively. The highlight of the day, however, will be a demonstration of ‘Tamgta,’ the martial art of Manipur.

Get set for the dance fiesta from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Fashionistas in the city can gather a tip or two from a costume show on Thursday. It will be followed by a pop music programme.

Five plays from the North-East will be staged at Tagore Theatre at 6.30 p.m, from Sunday to Thursday.

Meanwhile an exhibition of paintings, a trade fair, a food festival and a costume exhibition and sale will be held on the premises of Kanakakunnu Palace grounds from February 16 to 23.

The festival has been organised by the Ministry of Culture, Delhi, in association with the Department of Culture, Kerala, South Zone Cultural Centre, the State units of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sahitya Akademi, Lalitakala Akademi and Folklore Academy.
