Chords & Notes

Shafaq Ke Rang

Saregama, Rs. 175

This is clearly a poetess’s album; the songs just become a means to express the feeling. Each ghazal speaks tonnes about the calibre of its writer Indira Verma. Be it nursing a broken heart, longing for the beloved or just simply admiring nature. There are 10 tracks in the album, the last two of which are renditions of nazm by the poetess herself.

The album opens with the title track by Sudeep Banerjee, who is also the music composer of the album. The second song, ‘Youn Wafa Ke Sare,’ is a soothing number in raga Durbari by Rekha Bharadwaj in her rustic voice. The third song, ‘Ye Mausam Surmai Hai,’ is another winner with its powerful music and lyrics. The other songs, ‘Abhi Se Kaise Kahoon,’ ‘Shikasta Dil Ansheri Shab,’ ‘Woh Ajeeb Shaqs,’ ‘Mohabbat Mein Aaya Hai’ and ‘Kuch Bala’ are just the usual and passable.

Buy the album if you have a special something for Urdu poetry. For those who don’t understand that language, there’s a booklet in the CD with English translations of each poem.

Above & Beyond - Anjunabeats Vol 5

Saregama, Rs. 295

This is the official Sunburn Festival album. The event that took place in Goa is considered to be one of the biggest electronic dance parties in India.

The album is fifth in this series and features Above & Beyond, who are considered among the best DJs in the world. The album is a must buy for party animals and electronic music lovers, as Above & Beyond are hailed as saviours of trance.
