Shun saas-bahu saga Viewers have wider and wiser choice to watch and learn now
Emergence of lifestyle channels has given the much-needed respite to the elite and the exclusive few who were eager to shun the bizarre soaps churned out by producers who are laughing their way to the bank. The rare breed of non-soap viewers is incre
asing by the day and these lifestyle channels are rightfully cashing in on this market. Soaps only have sensationalist storylines, which titillate emotions but do not give any aesthetic satisfaction.
After years of never-ending “K” sagas and daily serials in Telugu channels like Rituragaalu, Chakravaakam and the likes, channels like Travel and Living by Discovery, ZeeTrendz and NDTVGoodtimes have come with a whiff of fresh air. Viewers now have the choice of feasting their eyes comfortably ensconced in their couches, on exotic locales, lifestyles, food and trends from across the globe.
Authentic flavour
Travel and Living is a subsidiary of Discovery channel and almost a pioneer in the field. Anthony Bourdian takes you around the world for an authentic experience and flavourful food. Nishita, an urbane woman and a soap-basher, spends hours watching the exotic world unfold in front of her. “My personal favourite is the Feasty Boys who search for local and famous foods around the world,” she says. Samantha Brown takes us on a voyage through striking locales of Europe, Latin America, Rio, Mexico and Hawaii. Those with queasy tummies better stay away from the Bizarre Foods, hosted by Andrew Zimmern, as the programme is strictly for foodies. The gourmand also has a choice to feast on The World’s Best Places to Pig Out.
NDTV’s tie-up with Kingfisher has resulted in varied, slick programs catering to different age groups. RBK life is for fitness freaks with a three pronged programme based on different styles of exercises, from Taichi, Judo to Dancercise. Artistic Yoga’s gap fillers have Usha Chengappa exhibiting different asanas in sublime natural surroundings. Leela, a lecturer by profession, rarely watches television but is addicted to this programme. “I like to workout while watching NDTV Goodtimes as it is a great motivator and the quotes that come on the screen are just too good. Some good lines like “Thoughts are like traffic in the mind and the meditation is in the gaps” are etched in my mind,” says a panting Leela.
Food joints
Around the World in 85 Plates hosted by Magandeep Singh, is literally gourmet food served on a platter. Then there is Highway on a Plate, hosted by Monty and Vicky who take you around small but significant dhabas and food joints, famous in almost every city for their local flavour and authentic taste.
Zee Trendz too is closing in fast and has dedicated viewership. Smart Idea offers a taste of things to come across lifestyle, design and technology. This series is upbeat, entertaining and informative. Enjoy themes such as home, recreation, getting around, work place, lifestyle, kids, communication, design, travel, health, fashion and environment. Step into the future as it brings you the latest Smart Idea.
This glamorous magazine style series encapsulates dreams and desires and radiates sophistication. Every episode will entice you as it takes a lavish look at objects of desire, luxury locations, expensive and extravagant treasures and much more. “Planet Luxury transports you to beautiful, sometimes exotic destinations to provide you a peek into the high-end products,” says Seema, a homemaker.
