Jaspinder Narula on her return to the limelight
|
In tune with times Jaspinder Narula
Remember “Pyar To Hona Hi Tha” — that operatic song which made Jaspinder Narula a household name. However, big banners didn’t show much faith in her and she was reduced to singing Punjabi numbers or the high-pitched Bollywood
ones like “Hata Sawan Ki Ghata”. Now Jaspinder is making a comeback of sorts with the reality show Dhoom Macha De on NDTV Imagine. She is not peeved with the past. “I did whatever I could, keeping my dignity intact. I am one of those who keep a low profile. I was also busy with my personal life, so I could not take up too much work.”
In the meantime, Jaspinder has completed her doctorate in Music from Delhi University and is waiting anxiously for the convocation. “It took me 14 years. I have worked on the impact of Urdu and Persian on different categories of music.”
Jaspinder says most of the film music is rooted in Urdu and Persian music forms like khayal, naqsh gul and qaul kalwana, and of course ghazal and qawwali, but the audiences are losing touch with the language. “For instance, ‘Kajra Re’ opens with a qaul, and then Gulzar Sahib takes it towards the popular. Now I can’t tell Gulzar sahib what to do, but had I been in his place I would have used public platforms to tell people what they are listening to is qaul. We have reached such a stage that if we don’t spread awareness, such forms will become extinct.”
She cites the example of ghazals. “There is nobody to replace Jagjit Singh. We can’t even say that someone is a bright prospect.”
Having trained under Pandit Sitaram Sharma of the Jaipur gharana and Mushtaq Hussain Khan and Ghulam Sadiq Khan of the Rampur Seheswan gharana, Jaspinder says she is taking the reality show as an extension of her stage performances.
Talking about the sudden surge of playback singers who want to be seen, Jaspinder says there are always one or two singers who want to act to their own songs. “Noorjehan and Suraiyaa are fine examples. The show is very much like Harmony on Sony, where different playback singers used to perform.” But they were not judged and there, Jaspinder didn’t need to compete against Devang Patel and Anaida. “I agree they are more of entertainers. But there is something which Anaida hasn’t and I have,” quips Jaspinder, quickly apologising if it sounded rude.
