Four Frames

Action adventure

The first of 2008’s big budget Hollywood action films “Jumper”, which has several computer generated (CG) scenes, released in Chennai this Friday. The sci-fi thriller is about the adventures of a man who discovers he possesses the exhilarating ability to instantly teleport to anywhere in the world he can imagine. From New York to Tokyo, from the ruins of Rome to the deserts of the Sahara, anywhere is possible for our hero played by Hayden Christensen, until he begins to see that his freedom is not total, that he’s not alone but part of an ongoing, global war that threatens the very survival of his species. “Jumper” opened big at number one at the U.S. box-office last weekend grossing $38 million, and should do well in Chennai where action films are hugely popular.

Image make-over

Ramya is trying for a complete image makeover in Tamil. She had made a fantastic comeback in Kollywood after a brief hiatus with “Pollathavan” and is the undisputed queen of Kannada cinema. She now likes to be known as Divya (her real name) and has made it clear she is not interested in the usual kind of glamour roles. Says the actress: “‘Pollathavan’ gave me a new image though I signed ‘Thoondil’ first. And in Gautham Menon’s ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ I play a character that offers me plenty of scope to experiment with look, costume and body language. It is a role I will always be proud to show my children years later. I am looking for good scripts and roles that will appeal to family audiences.”

Thotta is ready

It’s testing time for Jeevan whose long overdue film “Thotta” gets ready for release. Directed by Selva, the film has Priya Mani in the female lead with music by Srikanth Deva. The buzz is that the songs are melodious. Says Jeevan: “I’m happy at the way ‘Thotta’ has shaped up. It is an emotional family drama with plenty of action and a unique climax.”

Superstar Aamir!

Aamir Khan is turning out to be the biggest star in India after the stupendous success of his offbeat “Taare Zameen Par”. The Hindi remake of the Tamil “Ghajini” starring Aamir Khan and Asin, directed by A.R Murgadoss, has created history even before its release! The film’s various rights — Indian domestic theatrical, overseas, television and DVD — are said to have earned an estimated Rs. 93 crore. The producer of the Hindi “Ghajini”, leading Telugu producer Allu Aravind (Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law), has sold the domestic theatrical rights to the Mumbai-based Indian Film Company (IFC) for Rs. 53 crore. The producers have also sold the overseas, domestic video, and satellite rights for another Rs. 40 crore. This means Aamir Khan’s “Ghajini” has fetched a higher price than SRK’s “Om Shanti Om” which was snapped up by Eros Entertainment last October for Rs. 73 crore.
