Here’s what FHA2008 has in store

All about food The show expects 38,500 trade buyers from 80 countries

Returning for its 16th show, the biennial Food&HotelAsia2008, (FHA), Singapore, promises to play a role in the continent’s food and hospitality industries, while paying heed to current trends. Speaking at the preview at New Delhi’s Le Meridien hotel, Lindy Wee, Director, PR and Conferences, Singapore Exhibition, explains its relevance in the Indian context, “It offers Indian exhibitors and buyers a common ground to network and engage in business activities.”

Running from April 22 to 25, FHA is expected to host 38,500 trade buyers from 80 countries. With the growth of tourism, the global hotel industry boom and the expansion of food processing and retailing, FHA has come to acquire greater significance. Specialised events like FoodAsia, Wines&SpiritsAsia, Bakery&Pastry will be incorporated this time.

It will once again provide a business platform for international buyers and sellers. It will be a one-stop-shop for the latest products and technologies. While 490 Indian trade visitors attended the previous trade event, the number is only expected to rise this time.

Processed food consumption in India is set to grow at 10 per cent annually. In this context, special sessions on food safety will be useful. Wee says, “Food safety issues can’t be displayed. But we can talk about it. Also, with the rise of tourism and air travel, food service at airports and planes also need attention. For the first time, FHA will host the Asia Pacific Travel Catering conference and exhibition.”

The other firsts for this event include Asia Barista Championship. Wee says, “This will help raise the standard of baristas. And will help create a wider appreciation for coffee.”

Halal forum

The event will also include the FHA Food Safety Management Course, Asian Hospitality Finance and Technology Conference and even a forum on halal. This forum will discuss how halal food is processed from farm to plate.

Harish Sud, General Secretary, Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), asserts, “FoodAsia2008 serves as the complete food and beverage marketplace, with thousands of buyers under one roof.” He is also of the firm belief that food safety management systems will help the industry. With the Commonwealth Games less than 1000 days away, the FHA has come at an opportune time, he says.
