With small steps
Nowadays, NGOs abound, focusing on various social issues. The NGO Amanuday too has a good cause to espouse, that of providing vocational training to young girls living in the slums of Delhi.
For the dual purpose of raising funds and promoting the merchandise, such as achaars, prepared by Amanuday girls, a carnival was organised this past Sunday in the Capital. The Spring Carnival 2008, arranged at the Sudan Embassy, also included Delhi-based shops and vendors displaying an array of items for sale.
Kusum Narang, a visitor, said, “The space selected is good and the jewellery shops are worth a look at.”
The NGO teaches these disadvantaged young girls several vocational skills like beauty care, handicraft skills and pricing of products to make them self-sufficient. Regular health camps are also held to make the girls aware of health and everyday hygiene.
“Whatever is earned through the carnival will be utilised in the purchase of computers and other things for Amanuday,” said Aruna Mukim, President of Amanuday. The NGO is based at Jagatpur area near North Delhi.
