EXEMPLAR ’08 Management Is no cakewalk
India lags behind China, because Indians are lazy,” a student declared unflinchingly. And, went on to defend his statement. He better! MBA students learnt a plethora of management nuances, such as the one above, at Exemplar ’08, the South zone intercollegiate management meet held by Hindusthan School of Management. Nearly 200 students from over 15 colleges fought it out in seven events.
To emerge as the Best Manager, the competitors had to come out unscathed in five rounds. The first round saw participants talking extempore on topics such as beauty and brain, India and China, etc. After aptitude and memory tests and business proposals, the final three took on the stress interview. Hmm…, they stammered and stuttered for answers as the judges callously cornered, intimidated, humiliated and bombarded them with questions. Whoever said being a manager was a doddle! Kumaraguru College of Technology bagged the first prize.
Elsewhere, a bunch of students was slapping their unthinking heads at not being able to identify the logo on the big screen. It was the second round of Brand War, and the logo was that of the German biggie Volkswagen.
Brand ambassadors
Other questions included naming the brand ambassadors of, well, the brands given. While many could be answered hands down (Whirlpool – actors Kajol and Ajay Devgan), a few others nagged you (Nerolac – Amitabh Bachchan), and the rest were absolute toughies (Bank of Baroda – Rahul Dravid). The five finalists were asked to invent a product. Strangely, many came up with watches with unbelievable features. In fact, one of them showed everything except time. Another team came up with a unisex ‘jasmine’ body spray! Most teams failed to drive home the message, and one of the judges was a terribly disappointed man. The team from Sankara Institute of Management emerged winners.
The initial rounds of Best
Corporate Team were far more interesting than the final. Teams were given the jumbled slogans of a brand, and asked to find out the brand name. One of them got four words: efficiency, excellence, edge, is. The answer – Edge is Efficiency, tagline of Bombay Stock Exchange. And, oh, the word ‘excellence’ was thrown in just to flummox them! The team from PSG Institute of Management made it to the top slot.
Soft Skills was easily the personal favourite. It had many interesting rounds - on listening skills, wherein, one got to listen to a song and fill up the missing words of the lyrics; finding out a four-word or five-word proverb that lay buried in a crowd of around 30 to 40 words; word play, where one formed sentences with the words given; and finally, describing the oh-so-cute advertisements played for them. It was complete fun, but, sadly, the performance of the students was not half as much fun. GRD Institute of Management came out the best.
The other events were Quiz, Case Study and Stock Games. The winners were from VLB Janakiammal College of Arts and Science, GRD IM and PSG IM respectively. The host college wins appreciation for time management.
