Immortalising experiences

Latika Katt, the legendary artist, believes in immortalising the vignettes of everyday life in art.. She has lived life on her own terms and she has translated her experiences into paintings and sculptures. A retrospective exhibition of her drawi ngs and sculptures were on display at the Anant Art Gallery this past week.

The exhibition titled ‘Translated visual experience’ marked the artist’s 60th birthday.

A look at her works would reveal that it is nature that spurs Latika’s creativity. Each drawing and sculpture on show marked her various encounters with nature.

The veteran artist, who graduated from Banaras Hindu University in 1971, has sculpted forms on wax, wood and metals too Innovative about the choice of materials, Latika has sculpted with marble, fibreglass and even cow dung. Her works are a reflection of her journey through life. Drawings done years ago and portraits of friends who have now aged beyond recognition were part of the collection. There were even classroom life drawings from her student days.
