Tribute to Khayyam

On WorldSpace Satellite Radio

For decades, songs such as, “Kabhie kabhie mere dil mein,” “Dil cheez kya hai” have immortalised romance on the silver screen. The man who breathed life into such poignant poetry with melody is Khayyam.

Radio Farishta, the 24-hour classic Hindi film music station on WorldSpace Satellite Radio celebrates Khayyam’s 81st birthday with a special series on his musical journey at 10 p.m. till February 29.

Famed for working on his own terms, Khayyam was one of the most expensive and sought-after composers of his time. In this series, Khayyam shares facts about his life, along with hand-picked songs from his library with listeners.

In the programme, the maestro talks about his mentors, contemporaries and the composers who set the trends in Hindi film music. On the artistes he appreciated, he says, “Raj Kapoor was a progressive filmmaker and one of the few who understood music.” He also adds, “Asha Bhosle’s involvement and dedication to music are exemplary.”
