Western culture
Western culture of schools collecting funds for Annual Day seems to be spreading to India. It is not uncommon to see students misbehaving with each other during such functions, resulting in fatal injuries. Teachers force school children to vibrate to filmy songs rather than classical dances. What has become common in the West has now taken roots in India. Many elite school Annual Day functions preach to children to be competitive and successful without infusing human values in them Every parent wants the child to study in the best school and eat in the best hotel. As of now, both parents and children are happy with the new-age schools, notwithstanding the exorbitant fee and posh Annual Day celebrations in marriage halls, private auditoriums and posh hotels. It is time our educationists gave a serious thought to the increasing posh Annual Day celebrations plundering parents of their hard earned money. School children should be instead taught the dictum of Albert Einstein, "Do not aim to be a person of success, but aim to be a person of values."
