Happy birthday leaplings!

How does it feel celebrating your birthday on a leap day?

It’s special A ‘leap’ birthday

For leaplings, people born on a leap year, this year was extra special. For, after four long years, they got to ring in their birthdays on the very day they were born – February 29. And, ironically, while everyone grows older with every birthday, leaplings don’t.

We spoke to quite a few leaplings such as Balkishan L., hockey star Adam Sinclair, Kunaal J., Shweta B. and Neetu P., and each one of them has fond memories of their birthday.

When Balkishan was in Class one, his mother Kamala taught him the rhyme “30 days in September, April, June and November…”

And, the creative kid added his own line to it, saying that ‘every leap year is Balkishan’s happy birthday’. Now a lad of 20, Balkishan says he realises the value of his birthday. And, the eager wait for yet another birthday, the celebrations, and the gifts, since it all happens only one in four years.

Neetu P., proprietor of ‘Bath Solutions’, quips to friends: “I am 44, but literally 11 years.”

In Veena Jagdesh’s home, her 20-year-old son, Dilip, introduces his older brother Kunaal to you as a six-year-old. For Olympian hockey star Adam Sinclair, who also celebrates his birthday on February 29, the day is really special, “since it comes once in four years, just like the Olympics.”

Just wondering, do leaplings face any trouble getting their driving license, bank account or passport? An RTO official says their literal age is not taken into account. “We calculate the age from the year he was born,” he says.
