A campaign on rails

An action-packed evening to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS is not only a dangerous disease because of its nature, but also because of the prejudices and misconceptions attached to it. Pointing at this message, a street play was performed at New Delhi’s busy Connaught Place area recently. ̶ 0;To eradicate HIV/AIDS from the nation , one not only needs to be aware but also stop spreading rumours about it,” was the message that “Bimar Bhi Insaan Hai” sent out. It was performed by Bela Theatre artistes. An evening open for general public, it was organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), in support of the Red Ribbon Express (RRE) Movement.

On the occasion, photos and posters of the Red Ribbon Express, touted to be the largest rural campaign on HIV/AIDS, were also on display.

To generateawareness about this crucial issue, many organisations have used various platforms and means.

But this is for the first time that a train is being used to augment the cause. According to NYKS, in this unique way, the seven coaches of Red Ribbon Express have already reached 8,50,000 people in 2124 villages covering the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to NYKS, six cultural teams travelling on it have succeeded in assembling masses and spreading awareness through street plays and other cultural programmes.

The programme will go on for a year. .

The evening also saw passers-by writing their views on the disease and also on the RRE campaign.. To further the cause, NYKS has plans to set up Red Ribbon Clubs in various villages.
