As you read this, millions of youngsters across the globe are switching over from e-mails to scraps. Like it or not, e-mails are passé for those hooked on to social network platforms like Orkut, MySpace and Facebook. Short messages that are to t
he point are posted as scraps. Similarly, networking forums are slowly being used to send invitations for personal and professional events. An invitation posted on Facebook can inform your friends about your birthday bash as well as a film club/theatre festival that you are attending and your friends will find interesting.
Rudra Matsa of Panel Studios recently invited his friends on Facebook for the launch of the film Little Pandavas in the city. He says, “It’s a good idea to post invites on Facebook because it comes free. But the response I got was moderate. Those on Facebook, I guess, don’t look for serious stuff. By far, I’ve found SMS invites to be more powerful than any other method.”
Inviting friends over for a private do is simple task. Format your invite that gives essential details like the time, place and occasion. Click to select friends you’d like to invite and post them the invite on Facebook. An RSVP comes as a bonus and your friends confirm if they’d be attending the do. On the flipside, if one of your friends decides to post the pictures of the party online there’s little you can do. “Of course, if you have settings that let others see only your limited profile, you do maintain some kind of privacy. Otherwise, the pictures are there to see for anyone who accesses your profile. Facebook does have its advantages of taking messages quickly to a focussed group. At the same time, there’s a tendency to be flippant. Often I get bombarded with invites for applications like poke, superpoke, super wall, etc. Honestly, I find it irritating to sign up for applications like ‘movie compatibility’, ‘how sexy is your name?’ and other such applications. Amidst all this, I might just overlook a genuine invite,” says Aishwarya S, a research student.
While night clubs, restaurants and malls in metros like Delhi and Mumbai are experimenting with Facebook invites for events, Hyderabad prefers bulk SMS invites. And there are still those who prefer the good old invitation cards. “Social network forums might become popular but personally, I prefer the old-fashioned way of getting invitation cards designed and hand delivering them. I also call people personally before an event,” says event manager Archie Paranji.
