Do your own thing

Myntra.com offers a canvas for you to print pictures and words on objects of your choice

Want to wear your heart on your sleeve? Do it. Online. And umm... instead of the sleeve, wear it on a T-shirt or a pendant or a teddy bear.

Myntra.com is an online shopping portal for those who love to shop online from the confines of their home or office, and for those who don’t like to pick readymade stuff off the shelf. Here, you can buy personalised designs or make one of your own, uploading pictures and printing them on T- shirts, mugs, greeting cards, mousepads etc. Or if you feel someone else is expressing your thought, choose from a library of designs by graduates of the National Institute of Design, or day-time graphic designers who let their creativity take wing on the site.

This shopping portal has been up and running for about a year now, and this Valentine’s Day, they sold 200 products online, says the young CEO Mukesh Bansal. He, with a team of other 30-something fellow IIT-Kanpur, IIMB, and NIIT graduates set up this operation in Bangalore in 2006 and the site has been open to the public since May 2007.

Corporate customers make up almost 50 per cent of their clientele and often small teams print up their team’s achievements or group photos on products. Watches, coasters, calendars, notepads, jigsaws, plates, key chains, posters and coasters, and even mirrors — you name them and they have them. Want your photo or your girlfriend’s printed on your watch? Or want your name and sun sign printed on it? Just upload the picture and have it delivered at your doorstep in ten days. Or you could try putting your family’s holiday snap onto a jigsaw puzzle to be re-assembled by the kids later.

It’s an ideal space to get a gift together and make yourself something you’ve always wanted — maybe print a photo of yours taken with Shah Rukh Khan on a t-shirt and show it off!

Apart from buying, you can also upload your own designs, and if someone buys it to put it on their product, you earn royalties with every sale. There’s also a contest for designers held every few months.

You can also earn brownie points if you recommend the site to a friend and the friend buys from the site.

Jigsaw puzzles come at about Rs. 199; watches about Rs. 1,999; t-shirts about Rs. 349; mugs and mirrors about Rs. 249; teddy bears about Rs. 499 and so on (add to this taxes of four per cent to 12.5 per cent and shipping costs). Shipping costs Rs. 25 in metros and Rs. 40 anywhere else in India. Credit cards, net banking, cash cards and cheque payments are accepted. They have a tie up with DTDC couriers. Check myntra.com for details.
