Back in the limelight

Meena is set to make a comeback on the Telugu screen, writes Y. SUNITA CHOWDHARY

“This is the best phase in my life,” declares Meena who is currently in the city shooting for Doraswamy Raju’s soap Tadigonda Vengamamba for the TTD Channel. This also marks her return to the Telugu screen after two and a half years. Despite the hiatus, Meena still retains the same innocence and freshness and appears very relaxed and confident. She has also signed a film with Jagapati Babu which will be a remake of the super hit Malayalam film Kadha Tariambo. The film also has Rajinikant playing a special role.

Explaining her absence, the actress says that the same rona dhona kind of roles offered to her pushed her to take a break and she also was looking forward to spending time with family and friends. “My last film here was Swami and I was bugged listening to the clichéd narrations and I made up my mind that I wouldn’t work until something special came my way. I didn’t want my fame, name and hard work to vanish with useless films.”

Meena recollects working hard since childhood — going to the sets, catching up with her studies, then tuitions, dance classes and story sessions. “I had a blast in the last two and a half years, catching up with sleep, lazying around, meeting friends, watching films, eating out and yes helping my mother in the kitchen sometimes. This was what I craved to do for a long time and isn’t that bliss showing on my face?”

What made her choose the 150-episode serial now? Meena had already worked in Doraswamy Raju’s banner more than twice (Seetaramaiyya Gari Manavaralu, Bhale Pellam) and thinks that it is as good as a home production and thanks the producer for choosing her for the lead role. “Idhi na poorva janma sukrutham,” she adds and continues, “Many people didn’t know of Annamayya till the film was made. The same goes with Vengamamaba. When the producer narrated the story I didn’t even think twice and I’m sure people will love it.”

Without beating about the bush ask her straight, if she’s seeing someone? She smiles and replies, “No. Why would I hide if I were to like someone. There had been rumours about me but I just don’t care.” But isn’t she missing out on marriage? “Most of my friends who’ve been married have counselled me to enjoy life. You are not missing out on anything, just have fun is what they repeat when they meet me.”

2008 will perhaps be another significant year in Meena’s career or she may just decide to marry and stay home. No, she isn’t telling, she just giggles.
