Despite using shampoo and conditioner twice a week my hair continues to fall. I apply castor oil at bedtime, but in vain. My nails break even as they grow. Vidya

You may be losing hair due to nutritional deficiencies, since your nails are also breaking. Diet is important for healthy hair and nails. Eat a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soya bean, curd, paneer, fish and eggs in your diet. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements. Apply a herbal hair tonic daily. Apply oil once a week, the night before shampooing your hair. Use less oil. Avoid massaging your head because the roots are already weak and massaging could aggravate your problem.

My nails look yellow though I rarely apply nail polish. Bharathi

Nail polish can leave yellowish stains. Rub pieces of lemon pieces daily on your nails and watch if the stains get lighter. Consult a doctor because nails can reflect nutritional deficiencies, or some other health problem. Before going out in the sun, massage sunscreen into the nails and the skin around them. This may help, if the problem is caused by sun-sensitivity.

After applying cleanser, toner and moisturiser, can I apply face cream and powder? Or should I only use cleanser, toner and moisturiser? Nazneen

After cleansing, toning and moisturising, apply powder, or foundation and powder. Apply either moisturiser, or face cream, not both. Also, select the products according to skin type. Oily skin may not need moisturising, especially in summer. Apply a day cream for oily skin or compact powder.

My skin is dry. What I should apply on my face? Even after a bath my entire body gets dry. Garima

Avoid soap and use a cleansing gel or cream. Keep your face well moisturised during the day. Apply a sunscreen before going out in the sun. At night, massage a nourishing cream along with a few drops of water on your face. This helps the skin retain moisture. You can also mix one teaspoon each of honey, milk and almond oil and apply it daily on your face, washing it off after 20 minutes. Use mild glycerine soap for bathing. Apply til oil before a bath. Immediately afterwards, apply body lotion, while the skin is still damp. It helps seal in moisture.

I have dandruff. How do I use henna?Dhivya

Add 4 teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, 2 raw eggs and enough “tea water” to the henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Tea water can be made by boiling used tea leaves again in enough water, and then cooling and straining the liquid. Apply the henna on your hair once a week, washing it off after one hour with plain water. If your hair is dry, add 2 tsp of oil. If you do not wish to use egg, add more tea water.

My hands and the back of my neck are dark and tanned. Radhika

Mix 3 tbsp of sunflower oil with 5 tbsp of coarse sugar and 3 tsp of lemon juice into a paste. Apply this on your hands and neck three times a week. Wash it off with water after 15 minutes. Or, you can mix besan with curd, lemon juice and a little turmeric. Apply it on the dark areas thrice a week, washing it off after half an hour. Then apply til oil and massage it into the skin.
