Good hair days are here

Hair stylist Najeeb Ur Rehman throws in some quiet moments and meditation in this field of glamour

Hair character More to hair than colour. Najeeb at work

It’s a treat to watch Najeeb, whose hands, like the fictional character, Edward Scissorhands go snip, snip. Najeeb Ur Rehman is technical manager of Schwarzkopf Professional, India. He looks after the hair care products section of the company. He was in the city to conduct a workshop for beauticians to present the company’s ‘Essential Looks Collection’ with a demonstration of the season’s haircuts.

In the hairstyling business for the last 14 years, he breathes hair styling. “It is important that the hairstylist knows about the product that he/she is using. Each client has different kind of hair, and therefore requires personalised attention and care. It is like when you have fever and a doctor prescribes a medicine. The mg would be different for each patient. The same goes for hair care products,” says Najeeb, who believes in constant up gradation of knowledge to keep in touch with the latest. “Only if a stylist keeps herself/himself updated can she/he be of help to clients.”

That he knows what he is talking about is evident from the deftness with which he transforms heads and hairstyles. “Styling hair is not about only a haircut or hair colour, there are several other things as well, straightening, rebonding, relaxing…there is a whole gamut of things that can be done,” says Mujeeb. So obsessed is he with hair that ask him what he does besides hair styling and he goes silent. “I am a deeply religious person. I know this field is all about glamour but I take a quiet moment, and throw in some meditation as well.” He has styled many glamorous heads. Najeeb has styled hair for the 1996 Miss World competition held in Bangalore. “If ABCL had similar events subsequently I would have been involved,” he says. Najeeb started his career at Blossom Kocchar’s ‘Pivot Point’ before joining Schwarzkopf seven – and – a – half years back.

So who styles his hair? That catches him on the back foot, “I get my brother to do it for me.” He does not trust anyone else? “It is not that. If a colleague is free he would do it,” he laughs.
