Intense exercises increase creativity

Weight training also regulates output of hormones

You may often hear people criticise those who train with weights as dumb muscle heads. The ‘iron pumpers’ are expected to be dull, boring and non-resourceful. Science has, however, stated that nothing could be far from the truth as intens e exercises have been found to increase creativity!

Researchers at Middlesex University in England asked their test subjects to think and come up with unusual uses for tin cans and cardboard boxes.

A group that exercised for 25 minutes before setting out on the task came up with more innovative uses as working out improved more than just their mood.

Self-awareness

According to Kate Hays, PhD., sport psychologist, workouts trigger deeper self-awareness. A detailed account of this study finds mention in the work ‘Working it out: using exercise in therapy.’

Psychologists such as Hays and Wes Sime, PhD., at University of Nebraska , regularly use workouts to trigger creativity in their clients during therapy sessions. They contend that training makes the muscles stronger, less tense and streamlines breathing pattern. Says Sime: “It frees up the individual so that both thoughts and words flow easier. It works the mind as much as the body”

Judy Torel, therapist and owner of Sweat Shop Fitness and Wellness Facility in Albany , New York , says exercise unlocks deeply buried memories that a person does not easily recollect. While training the muscles, a person would access “body memories” which he/she would never be able to accomplish sitting on a chair.

Weight training

Weight training also regulates output of hormones such as testosterone and growth hormone, and releases endorphins. These help a person to maintain health, lean body mass, feel invigorated and above all, attain a sense of accomplishment.

Workouts improve digestion, sleep pattern and boost self-esteem.

A strong, healthy, content and happy person is more creative and productive at work. Corporates have grabbed this information and started to establish well-equipped gyms on their office premises.

Pumping iron is no longer sole property of a narcissistic minority.
