innovative A work by f Vibhor Sogani
Invoking God in steel. Well, this is how one can broadly describe “God & I”, an exhibition by Vibhor Sogani at The Stainless Gallery in New Delhi. The show, on till this Thursday, reflects the young contemporary artist’s different moods as well as experience vis-a-vis God. The works, abstract in nature, represent his expressions and thoughts while experimenting with various mediums, the dominant one being stainless steel.
According to the show curator, Alka Pande, “The works play with the inherent characteristics of steel while exploring a variety of techniques and finishes.”
She says, “Following Vibhor’s works for more than a decade now, I feel that this innovative young artist is working in the same trajectory which is rooted deeply in the very sophisticated yet complex traditional Indian art practice.” Vibhor, an alumnus of the prestigious National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, has worked in the areas of exhibition, retail and product design. He also has a line of signature products and lights which retail from select stores in New York, London, Paris and Tokyo besides India.
Vibhor’s first solo show, “Images Unwind” in 2002 at the India Habitat Centre’s Visual Arts Gallery, got him the award for the best ‘Applied Art Show’ of the year. Experimenting with materials like steel, brass, copper, bronze, stone and mixing media, he is now engaged in a series of commissioned projects and conceptual art assignments too. This includes art and urban installations in public spaces and traffic roundabouts.
One such ongoing project is a series of large installations in the six acres of greens that lie between the flyovers at AIIMS crossing.
