Thou art divine

Uma Khilachand’s images of gods are on display for a good cause

Uma Khilachand, a Gurgaon-based artist, has exhibited her images of Shrinathji, Balaji and Ganesha, studded with gems, Swarovski crystals and real diamonds at Allure, Le Meridien hotel.

The images are huge, ranging from two feet by two feet to eight feet by six. The images, the sales proceeds of which will go towards raising funds for People For Animals (PFA) run by Maneka Gandhi, are priced in the range of Rs.1.5 lakh to 20 lakhs.

Says the artist about her creations, “I started drawing images of gods at an early stage. Initially, I would do it on paper and later I started doing miniature embellishment. The embellishment would take 5000 to 7000 square centimetres space on each work. As age caught up, I couldn’t continue with such minute works and took to making them on huge canvases.”

Initially, Uma, who has been depicting divine icons through her art for over 35 years, was apprehensive as to how her works would be received, but she still took the risk. “I was cash-strapped in the initial years of doing it. Gems and precious stones were expensive and Swarovksi was not even available. It took me 35 years to reach a place where I didn’t have to take funds from anyone to make these works of art.”

From memory

These creations, Uma says, are an extension of pichwai works on Shrinathji. “Pichwai works (cloth with Krishna motifs adorning the images of Krishna in Nathwara temples in Mathura) are small in size but my canvases are big,” she differentiates. Uma, who had visited Nathwara haveli and temples earlier, creates most of the images from memory. “It is all God’s grace,” she concludes. The exhibition concludes this Monday evening.
