From Orissa, with art
Ganga Narayan Maharana, a talented artist from Orissa, is exhibiting his Basant Ritu paintings at Arpana Fine Art Gallery.
He has blended the season with a girl’s marriage. Ganga hails from a family of artists. His mother and sister are wall painters; his brother is a music composer. He learnt sketching from veteran artist Jatin Das who advised him to join an art school. Ganga, hence joined B.K. College at Bhubaneswar.
Forty-five-year-old Ganga has been able to mount few shows, He reasons, “I have gone to many art galleries but without seeing my works, they refuse to hold my show. They say, they want only big artists who can sell!
Galleries often take my works to sell and don’t give them back for years. One of the galleries even kept a work and said that I had taken that back. I showed the record slip but the gallerist refused to acknowledge it,” laments the artist who makes his living by teaching art in a school.
His exhibition concludes on this Thursday afternoon.
