I have small holes on my cheeks. Suggest methods to get rid of them. — Divya

Pits can be caused by acne. If you’ve not had pimples or acne, they may be open pores. After washing your face, wipe the areas with pits with an astringent lotion. Mix egg white with oatmeal and apply it on these areas thrice a week. Wash it off when it dries. You can also mix multani mitti with rose water and apply it on your face two or three times a week. Wash it off when it dries.

These days my hair is getting softer and thinner. I have dandruff. I get worried when I see more than two strands on my comb. Ganesh

The normal rate of hair loss per day is much more than two or three strands. Each strand has its own life cycle. When it falls, another strand replaces it. When loss overtakes replacement, there is thinning of hair. Dandruff can lead to hair loss. Wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo three or four times a week, using less shampoo and rinsing well with water. Half an hour before shampooing, massage two tbsp of vinegar lightly into the scalp. Once a week, heat olive oil or til oil and apply it on the scalp at night with cotton wool, rubbing gently to dislodge the flakes of dandruff. Leave it on overnight. The following morning, apply the juice of a lemon on your scalp half an hour before a shampoo.

I have small brown spots like freckles on my face. I heard that they grow into big brown patches. What can I do to get rid of them? Gayatri

That is not always true. Sometimes, the freckles do increase and then merge together, giving rise to patches. Apply a sunscreen with high SPF before going out in the sun. If you stay in the sun for long, re-apply the sunscreen. Mix rice powder and curd and use it as a facial scrub two or three times a week. Apply it on your face and rub it gently on the skin using small circular movements. Leave it on for five minutes before washing it off with water. You can also mix together one tsp each of curd, honey and lemon juice with 3 tsp of oatmeal. Apply it on your face twice a week, avoiding the lips and area around eyes and wash it off after 20 to 30 minutes.

Can I use milk as a cleanser? Divya

For normal to dry skin, milk may be used as a cleanser. However, you can add lemon juice to cold milk and use it. Lemon juice is a powerful cleanser. Or, you can take half a cup of milk and add three drops of any vegetable oil (til, olive or sunflower oil). Put this in a bottle and shake it well. Cleanse the skin with it, using cotton wool. Keep left-over mixture in the fridge. You should not make cleanser in large quantities or keep it for too long.

My upper lip is dark, but the lower lip is pink in colour. What can I do to make them the same colour? Suggest home remedies. Nazneen

The skin on the lips is thin and delicate. After washing your face, when the lips are wet, you can rub the upper lip gently with a soft towel. This helps remove dead skin. Then apply cream of milk on the upper lip (dark lip) and leave it on for an hour. Apply pure almond oil daily on the dark lip at night and leave it on overnight. Meanwhile, use a dark brown matte (not shiny) lipstick on the lower lip. Then use the colour of your choice on both lips. This will make the colour look the same on both lips. Change your brand of lipstick, because the perfume in some lipsticks can cause darkness as a reaction to sun-exposure.
