Songs for summer

Unwind Center organises “Summer of Love” a festival of vocal music

The Unwind Center celebrates 10 years of being in India with a vocal music festival - a revival of the best music of the past 50 years - called “Summer Of Love”. It will provide an opportunity for those who are inhibited to familiarise th emselves with the nuances of vocal music. It will culminate in a two-day live performance, combining voice and dance. People who can already sing, will benefit from the discipline of a structured course and enjoy singing the songs of the Beatles, the Carpenters, ABBA, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel, Brotherhood of Man and Billy Joel.

The festival is divided into two parts:

Training: From April 15 to May 20, comprising 12 days of vocal training, one-and-a-half hours every day. The tutors will be the best choral and a cappella teachers from Chennai, Bangalore, Coonoor and the U.S. Each batch will have 20 people who will learn 10 songs by artists of their chosen stream. The plan is to have five main musical streams with more than 500 participants.

Performance: On May 30 and 31. The finale, to be held at The Music Academy, will be a 2-day event, showcasing the training the participants have received. Well known local soloists and rock musicians will also participate.

“Summer of Love” is not just a catchphrase but has a purpose. It is a counter against the gun culture that’s becoming popular in our schools, the bombings in the metros that are commonplace nowadays, and the lack of concern and compassion towards the underprivileged who need more than just NGO projects. Learning to love the people around you more, is the theme. Registration for the event is on March 15, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., Landmark (Spencer’s), and March 22, 1 p.m.- 9 p.m., Sathyam Cineplex. Registrations are also open everyday at the Unwind Centers in Kilpauk and Adyar.

The course charges for the training and performance, for 15 days is Rs. 2500 and participants can register for their preferred stream of music.
