Picturesque Pichavaram

With basic facilities such as good roads and guest houses, Pichavaram could be a popular tourist spot

Sight to behold Pichavaram

The dense mangroves floating on the backwaters at Pichavaram are Nature’s bounty and a sight to behold. Their presence has split the waterways into creeks and canals and make for a pleasant boat ride. During high tides the boats can cruise thro ugh the mangroves which are spread over 3,000 acres and are home to several exotic and common varieties of waterfowls. .

The thick foliage, hanging roots and fruits of the mangroves add to the beauty. These species act as natural bio-shields and their utility is known only when natural disasters strike. They acted as buffers and lessened the impact of the tidal waves during the tsunami and saved many lives. Their protective nature has kindled interest to have such mangroves all along the coast.

Pichavaram, situated in Killai Town Panchayat, is about 14 km from the temple town of Chidambaram. People living here are mostly fishermen and farm workers. After Killai Ravichandran took over as the Chairman of the Town Panchayat, he has been focussing on promoting the place as a tourist spot.

He has also launched a website, www.killai.com, to showcase the tourism potential of the place. The Dawn Festival, organised a couple of years ago, created awareness that with concerted efforts Pichavaram could be placed prominently on the tourist map.

The five islets — M.G.R.Thittu (it has derived its name because M.G.Ramachandran had shot for a film there), Chinna Vaikkal, Pillumedu, Kannagi Nagar and Nadu Mudasalodai are a big attraction too.

Abound in coconut trees, these islets serve as launching points for the seafarers. The idyllic surroundings make them ideal locations for film shooting. If the local authorities take effort to provide basic facilities such as good approach roads and decent guest houses, the picturesque Pichavaram could be sought-after by tourists.
