Portraying oneself as martyr is passé. This age calls for self-indulgence, the art of pampering oneself

Take time out There is much more to life than just fulfilling family needs

The ‘me time’ is very important for me. I spend most of the day sharing time with others doing different things. Things that may be important but not the ones I like. ‘Me time’ is the time that I spend only for myself, doing things that I like most - reading a book, watching a movie or for that matter it could be doing just nothing," says, Amitabha Singha, a young entrepreneur.

Young or old, male or female, rich or poor, nobody in this age is alien to stress that kills our aptitude silently.

Learning to de-stress once in a while by doing something that can rejuvenate mind and soul is essential. Despite hectic schedules, professionals are taking time out to learn a new hobby to beat stress and find peace within.

Pursue a hobby

Sharmila has found a new love - herself. A software expert, she works almost 12 hours a day. “I felt exhausted by the end of the day and was unable to attend to my daughter’s academic needs. Then I opted for sessions of Art of Living for mental peace,” she says adding that now she devotes 45 minutes every morning to practice it.

Though stress can’t be wished away, pursuing a hobby that one may have enjoyed in childhood could help reduce its ill effects. “I was born with a green thumb but I could not cater time for gardening as I was busy in my business. Finally I am back in my green haven,” says a happy Sarita.

A break that can be entertaining and educative is the need of the hour. While some resort to painting, there are others who travel or go trekking. Seldom do housewives embark on shopping leaving the domain for the younger lot in the household or their male counterparts. Shopping with friends can be invigorating. One need not buy just about everything under the sun, but the freshness that the company of good friend bring makes a world of difference. Women should rise above the role of self-styled martyrs working incessantly 24x7 and rarely leaving any space for their own self.

Reading a good book can serve the dual purpose of relaxing and enhancing one’s knowledge base.

Listening to music is yet another great way of unwinding. “I have developed a liking for music. When I talk about music, I mean pure music. Classical music like Mozart or Beethoven are said to be great stress-busters. You can listen to music while driving, before sleep and even during work if the environment allows. The miniature iPods and the mechanism of downloading music on the computer have made things easy,” points out Asmita, working for a cell phone company.

“Of late, I have realized how cool a work-out session could be. The best, I believe, is still cardio-vascular exercises,” says a panting Srinivas working out on the cross trainer.

It’s time we shifted focus on ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘myself’. Chill out by doing your own thing. Seize the magic of the moment and shun fears of unborn tomorrow.
