Designers wake up to environmental realities at WIFW

Charkha returns Aruna Singh’s stall at WIFW
Fashion wants to free itself from flippant fetters. At least so it seems as the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 08 hops into its last lap. The designers appear to have woken up from a slumber to find the earth in danger. The mood was
set in the opening act by Vikram Phadnis. Pounding music and dancers with their brisk movements and stiff expression rang in the message — “Save the Earth.”
It is not Phadnis alone who had a vision of the planet in peril. Payal Jain, Anju Modi and Deepika Govind have also dwelt on global warming and an environment in crisis during their time on the ramp.
“‘Black Earth’ creates awareness about environment and global warming,” says Jain about her collection. “It has a message and our generation should try and make a difference,” she adds.
Deepika Govind’s ‘Conference of the Birds; Concert of the Sea’ stems from a holiday in the Himalayas and her realisation of the imminent threat to its glaciers. For a segment of her collection, Deepika approached an NGO in Rishikesh to weave environment-friendly textiles in silk wool with patterns of birds.
Aruna Singh from Jaipur has gone in for a collection in hand-woven woollen khadi. “The traditional woollen khadi is a little rough. But the Merino yarn is soft and can be hand-woven to put traditional patterns of Jaisalmer and other parts of Rajasthan on them. The garments are soft, nice and eco-friendly,” explains Singh. Singh’s love for eco-friendly clothes is shared by Ekta Jaipuria and Ruchira Bhandari, the names behind the “Ekru” label based in Kolkata. “We have taken this to be a platform to save the earth,” says Ekta
