Pen awards
Rajasthan Patrika, a well-known Hindi daily, recently celebrated the success of many journalists by organising the KCK Annual International Awards 2007 in memory of its founder Karpoor Chand Kulish. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam gave away the prizes at an event in new Delhi this past week while Bollywood actor Anupam Kher announced the winners.
Assistant Editor of Dawn (Karachi) Afsan Subahi’s “Why Does Corporate Pakistan Detest Democracy” and Senior Editor of Hindustan Times (Delhi) Nilesh Mishra’s “The new Muslims — From Masjid to Market — A Journey” and their respective teams were declared joint winners for Excellence in Print Journalism. The theme of these awards was Human Development. The Jury, which included N.Ram, Editor, The Hindu, Piyush Pandey, the ad guru and Gulab Kothari, Editor and Managing Director, Rajasthan Patrika, looked at the news stories published between January 1, 2007 till December 31, 2007. Ten merit awards were also bagged by various regional newspapers.
Speaking on the occasion, Kalam said his interest in aeronautics grew after reading stories of war carried by two Tamil journals. Pen is a powerful medium of communication, he said, adding that journalists should not indulge in exaggeration and sensationalism. The occasion was also graced by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee among others.
