Food bytes

Debbie’s just had a baby, Harry Mose also known as ‘Sweet pea.’

And lost a cat, Mose, who had “six toes and an endearingly indifferent personality.” And finally used her anniversary present, a membership to Costco, by buying English cucumbers “a six-pack of coloured peppers, an enormous package of grape tomatoes, and a full pound of organic mesclun.”

Written from what she calls the “wilds of Williamsburg, Brooklyn,” Debbie says she started the blog “to provide an outlet for my two obsessions: food and writing. Between the baking and the cooking and the thinking about how to describe it all, I may have simply created a third obsession...”

The blog’s many readers probably log on so regularly because her posts— now irregular because of the baby — feel like a letter from a friend. It helps that this would be a friend who is particularly good at demystifying food. So she talks of the virtues of a slow cooker, “Harry’s morning nap is by far the most reliable, and it’s so lovely to just toss some stuff in the pot, turn it on, and know that we’ll have a healthy, fresh dinner waiting for us when I’m totally beat at the end of the day” and makes up recipes such as “I’m a New Mom and I Have No Time to Cook Turkey Chili” to deal with mealtimes on harried days. The recipes are unusual, and usually manage to be quick and easy, as well as sufficiently exotic to be interesting. Like her version of the Amazon Cake, which she makes “whenever I wanted a hit of deep chocolate flavour with minimal effort, minimal fat, and minimal cleanup. There are no eggs in it, nor butter, nor animal products of any kind, so it’s both pareve and vegan — but for once, it’s also incredibly satisfying.”

The blog contains a list of her current favourite cookbooks, such as the charmingly titled “The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook,” as well as an eclectic list of sites and blogs titled ‘friends, family and other good stuff,’ which includes everything from ‘Food porn watch’ to ‘Awful plastic surgery.’
