Global call Fiona Jeffery, chairman, World Travel Mart
A mum of two kids, a loving wife to husband Nigel and two years as the chairman of World Travel Market, Fiona Jeffery launched the second WTM World Responsible Tourism Day (Wednesday, November 12, 2008) at the Second International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Kochi. Having worked in the travel field for 21 years and two years as chairman, Ms. Jeffery has seen the industry grow. And as it is poised at a crucial juncture between rapidly growing tourism and its fallout especially on environment, Ms. Jeffery said, “As World Travel Mart, we bring 5,000 leading travel and tourism companies from 142 destinations around the world on a single platform.”
Representing this collage of countries and communities, Jeffery feels that the time has come to go beyond awareness to sustainable and responsible tourism. “I think we have come a long way. People now understand the vocabulary. We have to now move from understanding the meaning towards involving the government, the private sector and the communities in this.” And looking for active participation, for the translation of debate into deed, she says “Kerala is much more on the international scene now. And it should move quickly to attract people properly and effectively, so that it can take advantage of the opportunities that tourism has to offer. For Kerala is a very beautiful destination.”
