Naughty at forty

Shop smart and right to make sure life begins at 40

Chic celeb Shobhaa De

Do you think you are too old for clothes? Bangalore-based designer Sooraj Chawla has changed the clichéd look and has created a specialised range that looks trendy, naughty but yet making you look forty.

Sooraj says: “Middle aged women do not have to go to extremes in following trends to look youthful. Just a slight change in choice of fabrics and cuts can make all the difference.

Brocade

For example, a shift from the use of silk and Kanchivaram fabrics for saris to the use of crepes and georgettes makes a lot of difference. The way the crepe fabric drapes around the body gives it a more delicate look when compared to silk. Using brocade borders is another good option to keep the traditional look alive.”

“Mix and match” is the mantra for this season. Cocktail saris are the latest trend and every woman’s favourite. Patches and layers of different colours and contrasts are also making its way in this traditional category. Silver colour or antique gold embroidery used as rich embellishments creates a very glamorous look. A mix and match of both are also a good option.

Since the blouse is a very important garment while draping a sari, one can opt for a common gold or a silver blouse. A contrast blouse with the sari is the golden rule this season. Keep the necklines basic but show more of the back with deeper necklines. Sheer sleeves and a lined body for the blouse also look neat, says Sooraj.

Paisley prints on kurtas are recommended. Straight cut kurtas with chudidaars are a good option. A variation by using the empire cut is also in. For those who are comfortable wearing western wear, clean neat cuts and basic colours are the best option. Woven fabrics are highly recommended. It is time for the knits to take a backseat. Stripes are preferred than big bold prints. “Minor elements like fabric, prints make a lot difference in appearance,” clarifies Sooraj.

Accessories

Lastly, an outfit is incomplete without any accessories. Important accessories like a good handbag or a stylish clutch purse work well. Do not over wear jewellery. Either stick to only one piece of jewellery.“Matching everything to the outfit is a complete no-no. Adding more of colour with sensibilities will surely make any woman look terrific,” ends Sooraj.
