“Bodybuilding is a demanding sport. It requires sacrifice on many fronts. In order to succeed, a bodybuilder must not regard it merely as a sport, but make it a part of his lifestyle,” says Mir Mohtesham Ali Khan who recently took the fourth place in the All India Railway bodybuilding championships while representing South Central Railway.

Standing more than six feet tall, the 32-year-old Mohtesham packs 90 kgs of pure muscle on his well proportioned frame. He has won several titles in the past including Mr South Central Railway, Mr Andhra Pradesh (nine times) and Mr Hyderabad (eleven times). His idol is Arnold Schwarzenegger and he took to the sport inspired by the feats of the famed Austrian bodybuilding champion who went on to achieve success as a movie star and then as a politician. In fact, Mohtesham feels proud and happy when his friends refer to him as the Schwarzenegger of Hyderabad. After doing his schooling in Aliya HS and intermediate in Shadan, he went on to complete his engineering in the Indo-British Academy and was recruited into the South Central Railway under the sports quota.

He began bodybuilding when he was 17 years old and since then he has made a lot of sacrifices to reach this level.

He has followed a strict exercising regimen, maintained a controlled diet and led adisciplined life.

“I eat foods that do not have any oil in them. Also, my diet has very little carbohydrates and more protein. My daily protein intake comes from 30 boiled eggs (without the yolk), one kilo chicken, 20 oranges and 250 grams of green salad. I also have oat meal or sweet corn. The expenditure is more and I have no sponsors. But I try to manage funds as I love the sport and I am determined to succeed,” he says.

His workouts take up a total of five hours every day.

He goes through a complicated set of exercises for each muscle group so that a high level of definition (cuts as they are referred in bodybuilding ) is achieved before any competition.

To lose water and body fat, he undergoes at least one hour of sunbathing or a steambath. His goal now is to win a Mr. India title.

Considering his single-minded dedication, it would not surprise anyone if he did succeed in achieving his ambition.
