Self assessment for property tax revision - Voice your views
Praiseworthy
The guidelines issued by the State Government for revision of property tax in urban local bodies deserve to be welcomed. That property tax revision will be based on self-assessment returns to be submitted by property owners and the same will be collected by heads of corporations, municipalities and town panchayats and a master list prepared will considerably improve tax collection. This move will certainly act as a deterrent against any foul play. Besides, it is heartening to note that the master list will also be cross checked by officials with the records available with the State Government. The public expect the Government to make submission of self assessment returns to be less cumbersome and easy. The move to provide discounts based on the depreciation value of residential buildings, treatment of specialised buildings as a separate category and hoardings and communication towers will be treated as commercial buildings are praiseworthy given the fact that these are aimed at minimising the common man’s burden and maximising tax collections from the big players.
