Delectable Eggless desserts

Woopie! An eggless dessert festival, and the fussy vegetarian in me is thrilled no end. Bread carvings welcome us. Seated richly are plates of pies, cheese cakes and tortes that seem to have generously risen up to the occasion. Giving them company ar e the bowlfuls of fillings: the burgundy-coloured cherry, yellow-orange hued peach, passion fruit, startlingly green kiwi, black cherry, apricot and strawberry.

First, the ‘homemade’ chocolates. Clothed carefully in red and silver-coloured wrappers, they are ever so gently bitter and just about sweet. “That is because we use a judicious mix of milk and bitter chocolate,” Chef Ashok enlightens us. You have two varieties to pick from: almond and cashew nut.

Next, the cheese cakes. We bite into soft Blueberry Cheese Cake and Real Strawberry Cheese Cake, and are greeted by an unusual ingredient: choco chips! You can also try the Kiwi Royal Cheese Cake and the Passion Fruit Cheese Cake.

Delighful

Time for tortes. We try the rich Apricot and Strawberry Surprise Torte, the very chocolaty Peaches and Rich Truffle Torte, Kiwi Delight Torte, and the Red Cherry Classic Torte, with an enjoyable hint of red cherry.

However, it is a difficult task deciding the favourite between Chocolate and Butterscotch Praline Torte and Lychees and Chocolate Torte. While the former has delightful caramel crumbs, the latter has a rich flavour of the lychees. Do try them both. Also, give Blueberry Exotic Torte a shot.

By the time you reach the pies, it gets cloying. So, to the timely accompaniment of aloo muttar and gobi curries, we peck at the pies. The Apple Crumble Pie does exactly that: crumble in your mouth! The fillings are strong, be it the Fresh Strawberry Rich Pie or the Blueberry English Pie. “That’s why we made the crust thick – to even out,” explains Ashok. Surprisingly, the thick crust is easy to break. A personal favourite is the Australian Orange Choco Truffle Pie. Sink your teeth into a slice of orange, even as the chocolate melts. Take your pick also from Belgium Apricot Pie and Peaches Drum Pie.

The festival is on at Bakers Corner in The Residency till April 27. While the cheese cakes and pies are Rs. 100 a slice, the tortes come for Rs. 75 a piece. For details, call 0422-2241414.
