April 5, 2008 is the 45th National Maritime Day. The week long celebrations to mark the Day will conclude on April 5 with a public function at the Merchant Navy Officers & Seamen’s Association, Cochin. The function will start at 10.30 am. The function will be attended by seafarers, trainees of maritime training institutes, representatives of shipping industry, Indian Navy, Coast Guard, CPT, Cochin Shipyard and other govt. departments. It was on this day in1919 that the first Indian Ship SS Loyalty had set out on her maiden voyage from Mumbai to the UK with blessings from Mahatma Gandhi.
