Summer heat and hair

The summer sun can drain the life out your hair. Here’s how you can safeguard your mane

Come summer, and most of us are ready to protect our skin with sunblocks and sunscreen lotions of varying intensity. But, have you ever stopped to think of what happens to your hair, which takes the brunt of the sun’s rays? Compared to winter, hair behaves reasonably well during the summer, but problems do crop up because of sweat and dust.

“Every hair type is different, but most don’t create problems in summer because we tend to wash hair more often. However, dust and sweat are issues that need to be addressed,” says hair stylist Sonia.

Apply conditioner

She suggests washing the hair frequently, if possible every day, using a mild shampoo, to rid the hair of dirt, and sweat. If you have very frizzy hair, you could apply conditioner on the ends. Hair packs are a great idea, says Sonia. Opt for egg (gives great volume) or henna (for oily hair - cools and lends bounce).

Pamper your hair

And, do pamper your hair with periodic oiling. It is a must for our kind of climate. Dab on warm almond or castor oil; it nourishes the roots, and cleanses the scalp. If you want professional help, opt for hair spa treatments at a parlour. They are not frighteningly expensive, and the effect lasts for a week.

And, for that feeling of lightness, cut your hair short in the summers. Or, go in for layers. The blunt cut (think Bipasha Basu) is also back this season. It looks good, and keeps you comfortable, says Sonia. When walking, cover your hair with a scarf or dupatta. It is not enough, but offers a little protection

Use sunblocks

“Summer is also when the scalp turns greasy and tends to produce a lot of sebum (natural oil). And, when it combines with sweat, fungus can be formed on the scalp,” warns Bony Sasidharan, technical advisor of cosmetics major Schwarzkopf India.UV rays affect all hair, but their effect is pronounced on coloured or treated hair. Bony suggests the use of sunblocks for the hair, as summer can make hair drier.

Consult professionals

And, before heading to purchase the latest anti-dandruff shampoo, talk to a professional hair stylist. “Buying a product without consultation is like self-medication. It might, or might not work. Dandruff can be because of a dry scalp or excess oil. The treatment for both is different,” he says.

Protect from dust

His tips for a lustrous mane in the summer? “Wash hair often. Keep it as neat as possible, and protect it from dust. Cut it short. But, if you are particular about long hair, tie it up.”
